Frequently asked questions
What does Taxtimate do?
It uses your answers to calculate a preliminary 2026 federal tax estimate for supported situations. It also provides Illinois and Georgia estimates and the existing Florida/Texas handling for supported cases. The interview and results explain when a calculation is incomplete or outside the current scope.
Which states and situations are supported?
The federal estimator accepts supported full-year, one-state resident cases from all 50 states and Washington, DC. For states other than Illinois, Georgia, Florida and Texas, state and local taxes are not calculated. Moving between states, multistate income, nonresident or dual-status federal returns, and certain community-property situations require other help. The initial questions check whether your situation fits.
Does Taxtimate file my taxes or give me an official return?
No. The current service is an estimator. It does not submit a return or payment to a tax agency, and its results are not official tax forms.
Do I need an account or my Social Security number?
No account is needed. Do not enter a name, Social Security or ITIN number, mailing address, email address or password as part of the estimate. Some questions ask whether you meet a tax-rule requirement for an identification number; they do not ask for the number itself.
Are my answers saved while I work?
Your temporary estimate is saved to an anonymous browser session as you use the app. Use the app’s Continue and navigation controls, and check any saving or error message before leaving a section. This is not a permanent account or a long-term storage service.
What happens if I refresh?
Refreshing the main estimator intentionally clears the active temporary estimate and starts a fresh session. Opening an information link in the footer uses a separate tab so you can return to the original estimate tab. Ordinary navigation within the estimator does not intentionally clear your work.
How long is an inactive estimate kept?
Automatic cleanup removes estimates after more than 24 hours of inactivity. Cleanup runs every six hours, so deletion normally happens within about 30 hours of inactivity. You can also use the deletion button on the Privacy & data page.
Why does a result say “partial” or “needs review”?
Some answers are missing, unconfirmed or outside a supported calculation. Follow the messages in the interview and results. An amount shown for part of a case should not be treated as a complete tax estimate.
What if the site has an outage?
An unfinished estimate may need to be restarted if its temporary storage cannot be recovered. Keep your original tax records separately. Taxtimate is intended for temporary planning, not storage of your records.
How do I report a problem?
Use the Contact us page. Include the page name, what you expected and what happened. Fictional examples are best. Do not email tax documents, identification numbers, passwords or payment details.
